Remodeling of Dentin Implanted in Rabbit Bone Marrow by Mechanical Bending

Abstract
Bone remodels so that form matches function. This phenomenon has been studied with-the demostration of the existence of piezoelectricity in bone. Now, it is known that there exists piezoelectric effect in dentin of which organic and inorganic
constituents are very similar with bone. Considering piezoelectricity in dentin, we were to observe the influence of mechanical stress on the remodeling of dentin implanted in rabbit bone marrow. So this study was designed to implant dentin stick
mechanically forced by orthodontic wire and to sacrifice rabbits on 7th and 14th day. There appeared osteoclast-like multinucleated giant cells on the external surface of the middle portion of dentin stick in the convex side and osteoblast-like
cells
with newly formed bone tissue were seen on that portion of concave side. So, it was considered that the response of the dentin to mechanical bending stress was similar t that of bone.
